Nozawa Free Theater is a “theater” that takes the form of a self-service stick bar where you pay by the number of skewers. Once seated, choose unpretentiously and freely from the daily selection of skewers as your heart desires. Drinks are self-service as well; you can enjoy local sake from the Hokushin region and other discoveries of the day. Wrapped in the warmth of charcoal, the moment the meal begins feels like a curtain rising. We deliver a delicious experience where you are the star.

Jiyu Gekijo felt less like a restaurant and more like accidentally crashing a secret self‑service izakaya house party. The place is small, smoky, and full of that laid‑back Nozawa Onsen charm that makes you relax the second you walk in. There are 3seating areas, but the counter bar was the jackpot. My husband and I ended up sharing the space with a group of Aussies from Brisbane — and since he’s from the same area, we clicked instantly and were soon drinking, chatting, and trading stories like old friends. Instead of ordering properly, you just wander up and pick your own skewers: meat, seafood, veggies, and the occasional mystery item that only makes sense once it’s cooked. Each stick is cheap, so we chose with our eyes and curiosity, then grilled everything ourselves over red‑hot coals, pretending to be pros while it all sizzled away. With the self‑serve chaos, clinking glasses, and easy conversation, the night just flowed. By the time we stepped back into the cold Nozawa night, we smelled like charcoal and it felt less like we’d “been to a restaurant” and more like we’d been at a Japanese-style house party with friends and my favourite person. And then there was the owner, Kubo‑san — humble, kind, and effortlessly warm. He chatted with us, took photos together, and treated us like regulars, turning a great night into one of those rare, unforgettable memories. **SuGoi**

My family and I had a wonderful experience at the Nozawa Free Theatre izakaya. The couple running the venue were very welcoming and helped us set up for the cooking. There was a large variety of skewers to choose from and they were very reasonably priced. You pay per stick you eat. We had lots!! We were able to cook over coals while enjoying each other's company. We had a standing table set up but there was also seating. My family and I had lots of fun trying all of the different skewers (meat, vege, tempura and seafood). Thank you to our wonderful hosts for the welcoming, delicious and memorable experience!!! When we are back at Nozawa Onsen we will go here again!!

A delicious range of food for self cooking over charcoal. You can help yourself to drinks and then pay for everything you ate at the end. The staff we welcoming even though we got our reservation time wrong. Remember to bring cash. We ate 38 sticks between the two of us at 150Y each stick

I used it after skiing with my children. The staff and other customers were close by, and the atmosphere while waiting for the skewers grilled over charcoal was very relaxing, which was great.
